What type of degree are you looking for?

When would you like to start?

When thinking about becoming a veterinary technician, most people are drawn to the thought of working with animals on a regular basis. While this is certainly one perk to the job and will certainly be part of what you do, the veterinary technician job description goes far beyond simply cuddling and loving animals on a daily basis.

The reality is that the veterinary technician job description is quite similar to that of a nurse. In other words, your job is to care for the animal patients while providing assistance to the veterinarian. As such, you need to be prepared to perform a variety of different duties as a veterinary technician. For example, you may be called upon to assist the veterinarian during surgery or during routine physical examinations, where you may need to calm the animal down or even restrain it so the examination can be completed. You may also be responsible for taking the animal''s vital stats, such as reading its blood pressure and pulse.

In addition to working directly with the vet, the veterinary technician job description also typically includes interacting with the animal''s owner. It is not uncommon for veterinarian technicians to explain procedures to the owner or to tell the owner how to care for the pet after a procedure has been completed. Similarly, the veterinary technician may have to calm a nervous pet owner or even console an owner who has just lost a pet.

Depending upon the office setting, the veterinary technician job description may also include taking care of routine office tasks such as answering phones, making appointments and handling payments. Veterinary technicians may also need to care for pets who are being boarded at the veterinary office. For those who are serving in a supervisory capacity, on the other hand, the veterinary technician job description may even include supervising other technicians on duty.
